The highlights of this Marseilles born and bred artist's life overlap with the end of the portugese monarchy, the genesis of the first Czechoslovak Republic and the early days of american cinema ; her path crosses those of Maurice Chevalier and Mistinguett. In 1918, back in her hometown Marseilles, rich but already sick, she decides to buy herself and her mother a magnificent and full of pomp italian style villa about to be sold at auction. For 500 000 francs, she took it away from a rich greek merchant. Proud to have its prodigal child back in town, the local press published a verse from Paul Verlet :
english La villa maud un mercredi
Devint la villa de gaby
Le salon défaillant doré
Murmura: "sans toi je serais,
Princesse du chic et du chèque
Une mauvaise pièce grecque !

(The Villa Maud on a wednesday
became the Villa of Gaby.
Fainting, the golden lounge
whispered : « Without you I would be,
princess of chic and cheque,
a bad greek tragedy ! »)
Struck by tuberculosis, she dies in 1920, leaving her house to the City of Marseilles. « I establish the City of Marseille as sole legatee, making it responsible for transforming the Villa Maud, which I own in Marseilles at 299 Promenade de la Corniche, into a children hospital that will bear my name and be looked after using my income and my estate. »
